Mi Goreng Indoneisan Instant Noodles Review

Mi Goreng is Indonesia most famous instant noodle. It’s status is much like Maruchan in America, but it actually taste good. One major difference between these instant noodles and the American version, is that its eaten dry. You combine it with the various packets of sauces and condiments. The end result is similar to what you would get with Fried Noodles.

Origin

In indonesia, there is a large population of Chinese people. As such, their food and cutlure is heavily influenced by it. Mi Goreng is derived from Chow Mein (Fried Noodle) that is common in a typical Chinese fast food Restaraunt. However, what is different is the presence of Indonesian influence such as shallots, Sweet Soy and Hot Sambal Oelek. As the dish grew and gain in popularity, many different variations started to arise. Mi Goreng udang will incorporate shrimp, Mie goreng kambing uses sheep and Mie goreng sapi uses beef, you get the idea.

Where to Buy Mi Goreng Noodles

Because of the popularity, it has become one of Indonesia National Dish. However, the popularity is still not as great in America. You can only find their prepackaged instant noodles in Asian Supermarket and on Amazon. You can also try to make it yourself, but I imagine you would have a difficult time to gather all the special ingredients. Some of which is kepap manis, sambal oelek and Fried Shallot. Those sauces are actually great on their own, so its not really a bad idea to have it on hand.

Luckily the price of these noodles are cheap. They are very affordable, so even if you do not have those condiments on hand. You can still enjoy the noodle on the cheap. At the asian supermarket, a packet of 6 only cost three dollar. The price is almost the same at Amazon, you just have to buy in bulk.

What does Mi Goreng Taste Like

Mi Goreng is a slightly salty and sweet noodles. That is mostly due in part due to the sweet soy sauce. Or kepap manis. As stated before, it best eaten with a slight chew. It is suppose to resembles that of Stir Fry Noodles. Not your traditional Ramen noodles.

Preparing Mi Goreng

To prepare Mi Goreng, is actually very simple. The key thing is to only let the noodle soak in hot water until al dente. If you leave it in the water for too long, it will become soggy. Once the noodle has soften, all you have to do is mix in all the sauces together with the noodle. Be sure that the noodle is slightly moist so that its easier to mix. I also found that the packets of sauce is incredible difficult to open by hand, I recommend you use a scissor to cut it open. This will make your life easier. You can also squeeze all of it out in one go.

What to Eat with Mi Goreng

Mi Goreng is great by itself. However, I often pair the noodles with one or two sunny side up eggs. A few slices of tomatoes and cucuber adds a depth of freshness to it. You can also add some shrimp, beef or pork if that suits your palate.

Mi Goreng Health Effects and Nutrition

Is Mi Goreng Bad for You?

Like all instant noodles, they are not healthy. Most are loaded with Sodium that with one package will overtake your daily sodium intake. With one packet of Mi Goreng noodles you can expect 820 mg of sodium. Or 36% of your daily intake. That is not so bad compared to other instant noodle. What is bad is the amount of saturated fat. It contains 7 g or 37% of the recommended daily intake. If that is a concern for you, or your cholesterol is high, you can just omit the fat package. It is the cream color packet that you find. The calorie content of the noodles is also fairly high. It has 390 grams per packet. Luckily, it seems like those are the major thing that is bad for you. Other than that, the other nutritional value seems tepid.

Is Mi Goreng Vegan and Hala

looking at the ingredient list of the noodles and the condiment packets, I do not see anything that stands out. There is yeast though, if that is restricted in your diet, I recommend you avoid it. Another thing that I found interesting is that it is also Halal certified. You can find the certificate stamped on the front packaging. You will find a list of the ingredients below.
