Paula Deen Cookware Set Review

Paula Deen Cookware Set is it any good? Paula Deen was one of the biggest celebrity chef in America. Before the whole tv scandal, she was in everyone household. However, almost any celebrity chef on tv has their own cookware set. I don’t necessarily fault them for trying to make some extra cash, but the majority of the time these cookware are junk. Granted some cookware are exceptions like the Rachel Ray set. But most of them belong in the lower tier category. This review will take a closer look at its design and feature. We will see if its any good.

Paula Deen History

Paula Deen started her career out of her home business. It was called the Big Lady but the rate of expansion outgrew her home kitchen. She initially moved in with a restaurant called the Lady then started her own restaurant called the Lady and Sons. Lady and Sons started to grew in popularity, being featured in USA todays. She started selling books and Food in supermarkets. In 1999 she began a relationship with the Food Network and her fame grew. However, because of the use of a certain word, her popularity took a huge dive and overnight, she practically vanished from television. While she might be gone from TV, her cookware can still be purchased at Amazon.

Paula Deen Cookware Set Design

This section will discuss the various construction and design of Paula Deen Cookware Set. We will take a look at its handle, shape and general performance.

Handle

The handle is made of metal that is covered in Silicone. These type of handle stay cool to the touch and gives you superior grip. However, these type of handle usually have a lower oven safe temperature. For this set the maximum temperature that is allowed is 350 degree Fahrenheit. This limits the overall versatility of the cookware. Professional cooks usually prefer an all metal handle. But for the home cook these handles are better. They are more comfortable and you dont have to worry about it burning you.

Shape and Pieces

The shape of the skillet is acceptable, it is a typical nonstick skillet. Not really exceptional but not too different from other nonstick cookware. The shape of the pots and saute pan are odd to say the least. The base is small with a rapid expansion in the mid section, the it narrows again. This give it a belly like shape. Most manufacturer do this because they want to save cost on production. While it might just save a few dollar on one set. But over the production run, this will save them millions of dollar.

In terms of usability, they are more narrow than others. These type of pots are only good for heating liquid. Sauce pot with a wider base can sear food in larger batches reducing cooking time.

With that being said, they’re still usable and this set lets you cook whatever you should need. One thing you should note is that in the 15 piece set, the lid counts as separate pieces. Manufacturers will often do this so it looks like you’re getting a better deal. Kind of off, but I find the chicken measuring table spoon to be charming.

Porcelain Enamel and Color

Oddly enough, the porcelain enamel exterior is usually only done on higher quality cookware. The finish is good and in general more durable. The design choice is a dinosaur like egg color. Odd but its not too different from the granite type of cookware. I guess it depends on the style of choice you like.

Lid

The lid is made of glass and the knob flows with the general design. Glass lids while good in theory arent always the best choice. Initially you can look inside, but once it steams, its pretty much useless. An all metal design would be better because they last longer and you don’t have to worry about it shattering. These lids also lack the vented holes like other glass lids. They’re usually good for steaming food.

Non Stick Finish

The nonstick finish is the best and worse part of the pan. It is best because nonstick makes cooking a lot easier than it usually is. However, they are also the weakest part of the cookware. No matter the brand, expect them to last one or two two year before replacing it. For this reason, its usually not a good idea to buy an expensive pan. While they do have a warranty. They are subject to the manufacturer discretion. If they should somehow find you misusing the pan, they can deny it. With the cost of the shipping, its usually not worth it and best to to just replace it.

Making it last longer

There are two main ways to make it last longer. First is to never use a metal utensils. We all do it but little scratches with just accelerate the deterioration of the pan. Second is over heating the pan. At temperature of 500 degree and above, the coating will start to deteriorate. At temperature of 572 degree Fahrenheit, fumes will start to be released causing flu like symptom. This is known as the teflon flu. You can combat this by always adding oil to a cold pan. If you see smoke coming from the oil, you overheated the pan. This means you should lower the temperature.

Paula Deen Cookware Set Thoughts

The paula Deen Cookware set is not really that well designed. While the handle are comfortable and they use good paint, the shape is odd. It looks like a set with cost saving in mind. With that being said, it is still relatively affordable. But other set are better. If anything, you can get the Rachel Ray one.
