Is a Mini Food Processor Worth It?
Food processor are fantastic tools. They cut and chop with a speed that cannot be rivaled with a knife. Its also safer for those who are inexperienced with a knife. But they can be bulky and take up a lot of room. Bringing out a full sized food processor isnt always the best idea just to make salsa. All that extra work cleaning is pretty off putting. A good alternative would be a small food processor. They are easier to clean and takes up less space. While they cannot do all the task that larger model can, they can make mayo, chop food and mulch vegetable with ease. It is one of my favorite tool in the kitchen.
You may wonder whether a blender can do this same task…Not really. Blenders are generally much more powerful and they bring everything to a smooth consistency. They are better for making drinks then chopping food. You need a food processor to cut food into chunks.
Cuisinart vs Kitchenaid Mini Food Processor Design
This section will discuss the difference between Cuisinart and Kitchenaid Mini food processor. We will go over construction, blade and general usability. The model that we will review will be the Cuisinart mini prep and the Kitchenaid 3.5 cup model.
How to Use
Cuisinart Mini Prep
If you have never used a food processor before, they can be a little bit confusing. For the Cuisinart Mini Prep, you place the bowl on top of the motor and lock it in. The blade is free spinning with nothing locking it down. After that, you need to lock it in place. If you do not do that, it wont work. Once that is in place, you press the speed, chop is for sharp blade forward. The grind just reverse the blade using the blunt side.
Kitchenaid 3.5 cup Food Chopper
Using the Kitchenaid model is very similar to the Cuisinart model. You need to lock the bowl to the base of the motor. Then drop the blade into the bowl and lock the lid on top. Where it differs is the speed setting. On the side, there is a chop or puree setting. You select the option then depress the lid handle to operate the machine. One extra thing that the kitchenaid model has is the drizzle feature. It slowly feed in oil to make vinegrate or sauces. Something that the Cuisinart doesnt have. However, the lid is a little annoying to get on if you are not use to doing so.
Both of the blade design are very similar. They are both drop in and free spinning. There is nothing latching it or hold it in place for the cuisinart model. The kitchenaid model has a slight indent to hold it in place. Both have a rod on top that keeps it from jumping too high up. The blades are situated as such to get the most contact with the food. You will notice that the bottom of both blades are almost touching the ground. If they did not do this, lots of food will be left unprocessed. One thing to note is that for the Cuisinart model, the blade can get damaged. Mines developed a crack after a year or use. You should check to see if any cracks occur on the bottom. If it does, you need to replace it for safety reasons. As far as I know, kitchenaid does not have this issue.
The Cuisinart model is slightly more powerful at 250 watts where as kitchenaid is at 240. At this level, there is little to no difference between the two. You should be able to cut and chop any thing that can fit into the bowl. I would not attempt to make peanut butter though. For the size, the watts is more than enough.
Construction and Colors
Both model feels cheap and poorly made. They do not have the build quality of the larger model. The only solid thing is the base which houses the motor. But the exterior plastic do not feel particularly robust. While this may sound bad, almost all mini food processor are designed this way.
In terms of color, both offer a range of color. However, the kitchenaid model is much more varied in the selection. They match the color available for their mixer. If you want something to match the kitchen, I recommend you go for that model. Cuisinart have all the basic color though. If you are less fussy, its a good choice.
Cuisinart vs Kitchenaid Mini Food Processor Thoughts
These models are the Best Mini Food Processor on the market. They can chop and grind small batches of food with ease. While they are very similar in design, the Cuisinart model is a bit more intuitive and easy to use. However, the major issue is the blade, with time, it can crack and it needs to be replaced. The Kitchenaid model takes a little time to learn how to use it. The lid can be a little frustrating to use as well. But compared to the Cuisinart model, it is more durable and generally have a wider range of color. You should buy one that best suits your need. I personally would go for the kitchenaid model because of the blade issue.
