History of Le Creuset

Le Creuset is a relatively new company. It was founded in 1925 by two Belgium men. One was a specialist in Enamel and the other in Casting. Throughout the years, they made their name with their enamel cast iron cookware. What set them apart is the wide range of color that is offered. They slowly bought out the competition like Cousances and Descoware. Soon, they became the number one name for high end cookware.

Recently, they have been expanding to other lines of cookware. Things like stainless steel and nonstick have been becoming more popular. As such, we now have Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick.

Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick Design

This section will discuss the design and construction of Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick. We will go over handle, shape and overall performance.

Handle

The handle on Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick is beautifully designed. It is made of stainless steel with a heat choke on the bottom. This keeps it cool to the touch on the stove top and it raises the oven safe temperature. Interesting enough, I did not find it listed on their website. However, I did see that it is oven safe up to 500 degree Fahrenheit. Quite high for a nonstick cookware and one of the highest I ever saw.

In terms of ergonomic, it is very comfortable. The soft taper means that it conforms to the shape of your hand. It has a slight texture to improve its grip. A great handle overall.

Shape

The shape of the skillet is alright. The base is wide that improves cooking surface area. This increases the amount of food you can sear at once. This reduces cooking time overall. The bad thing is the corner of the interior. It has a sharp corner that gets in the way of whisking.

The pot are a little bit more narrow that I think. A better design is a wider design. This prevents food from crowding. I personally think one of the best design that they have is the Wok. The base is flat and wide with ample room for you to stir fry. What is disappointing is that none of this set has a rolled lip.

Induction Capable

These sets are induction capable. More than likely, the base has a stainless steel base attached to it. This makes it magnetic and compatible with those stove top. If you ever want to see if a pot is compatible, just use a magnet to check.

Another good thing about the base is that it improves the heat capacity of the pan. This lets you sear food better than traditional nonstick pan. It also smooth out the heat distribution a little better.

Nonstick Coating

The nonstick coating is pfoa free. PFOA is used in the manufacturing of nonstick cookware. However, the issue with it is that it causes cancer and damages the environment. Since the media got wind of this, there has been a lot of fear in regards to pfoa. But those chemical rarely if ever reach to the final product itself.

According to the advert, the nonstick coating is triple reinforced. These are usually a higher grade of nonstick because it last longer. Manufacturer usually sell different levels of nonstick, it is refreshing to see that Le Creuset use a higher quality one. With that being said, you can only expect these coating to last 1-2 year. Maybe 2-3 year for this grade. With that being said, the life of a nonstick cookware is tied to the coating. Once it goes, so does the pan. There are a few things you can do to prolong the life.

Prolong the Life of Nonstick

For starter, never use a metal utensil on the coating. Even it is advertised as metal utensil safe, I highly recommend against using it. I would also avoid the nylon and dishwasher as well.

Another thing that you should avoid is overheating the pan. That is the biggest factor in the degradation of nonstick cookware. At temperature of 572 degree and above, the teflon can release noxious fumes. This cause flu like symptoms known as the teflon flu. This has been known to kill small birds. You can prevent this by adding oil to a cold pan. If you see smoke being released, its time to lower the heat.

Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick Thoughts

Le Creuset Toughened Nonstick cookware is a pretty good set. However, you are really paying for the Le Creuset name. How long the cookware last is really due to the nonstick. If you are willing to replace it every few year than its a good set. But you can always buy a cheaper set. They do have a lifetime warranty and a 90 day guarantee. It is up to you whether its worth it or not.
