Best Granite Rock Frying Pan

Granite Rock Pan are the new cookware on the block. They advertise themselves as healthy, safe and nonstick. These pan have a rocky finish with a ceramic based nonstick. Compare to the standard nonstick pan, most of these cookware are casted. As a result, the metal is thicker letting it hold more heat. The Best Granite Rock Frying Pan should be fully casted with a stay cool handle. The nonstick coating should also be relatively durable.

What is a Granite Rock Pan?

Granite Rock Pan or Granite Stone Pan are basically pans with a ceramic coating. Manufacturer just name it stone because of its pebbly apperance. I am not sure whether this was done on purpose, but there exist many different variation. Not all of them are gray, some are blue, pink or other colors.

The coating is ceramic based so they are technically ceramic nonstick. This was a response to the growing fears of teflon. Because of this, advertisement of healthy and green is often associated with these pan.

The problem with ceramic cookware is that they arent durable. The nonstick coating will typically last six month to a year. Where as teflon pan will last 2 or 3 years. The reason is that ceramic has low ductility. As the pan expands and contracts due to heat, tiny fissures will start to develop on the coating. When that happens the nonstick coating starts to degrade.

Is Granite Rock Pan Safe?

Yes, its safer than Teflon. Teflon starts to release fumes if you overheat it. When that happens, you can experience flu like symptom. While it probably wont kill you, it will kill small birds. Another benefit of granite pan is the manufacturing. In the past, teflon uses a chemical called PFOA. This is a cancer causing agent that usually end up in the environment. In terms of that, granite stone pan are good for the environment and your health.

Is Granite Coating better than Teflon

I dont think so. The main reason is because they arent as durable. With a granite rock pan, it will last half a year to a year. Where with teflon you get 2-3 years. However, if you are health conscious, then granite coating is better.

Casted vs Stamped Cookware

The good thing about Granite Rock Pan is that most of them are casted. What that mean is that the pan are made from a mold. Hot metal is poured into a mold, letting manufacturer make it thicker and to any shape they want. With Stamped Pan, these are usually thinner and perform worse. The reason why manufacturer make stamped pan is because its cheaper and easier to manufacturer. All they need to do is press it via a hydraulic press. All Cast Iron Cookware is made via the casted method, hence the name Cast Iron.

For the 12″ Stone Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri, with 100% APEO & PFOA-Free Stone-Derived Non-Stick Coating, that pan does not mention anywhere in the Amazon listing that it is cast aluminum. The price point would indicate that it is stamped, given they have their thick cast line that you did not review: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BFL94M1/?th=1

Any thoughts on this pan? It’s a bit expensive in the 12″ size, but the 8″ and 11″, although not cheap, would be something to consider if they are not PTFE and hold up over time.
